Default Opening .doc file through MS Word v.s opening from source location

When opening a file through MS Word the document appears to be corrupted. But when opening the file from its source location the file is fine. Why is this happening? How can this be resolved and, what can be done to avoid this in the future?

Probably "Recover Text from Any File" is set in the File | Open dialog. Once
used, that setting is sticky until deliberately changed.

In the File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover
Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents."
