Default How to paginate a book

I am using Word 2007 in Vista.

I have built a book from essays and interviews. The book runs over 400
pages. I have a title page and several index pages, followed then by the
essays and interviews.

I want to paginate the book. I want nothing on the title page; Roman
numerals on the index pages and then normal page numbers centered at the
bottom.

I cannot find a way to do this with Page Number, or Footer. If I put in
page numbers, they start on the title page. If I manually put in Roman
numerals, then what ever I type goes to every page.

This is totally unacceptable. I must be missing something or doing something
wrong.

Any help will be appreciated
