How do I insert a title for a TOC?
I have created a TOC, and a Table of Figures for my thesis while working in
Word 2003 Master Doc - but am unable to insert a Heading 1 title into the TOF so that it appears in the TOC. And the TOC itself appears without a title at the top. How can one insert a title while working in Master Doc mode? |

Insert the titles above the table of figures and table of contents,
using the appropriate paragraph styles. For a table of contents title, you wouldn't use a style picked up by the TOC, of course. Note also that master documents could cause document corruption. Sorry, I don't have an answer because I don't use Master Documents. However,
you may need the reason I don't more than you need an answer. "Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a good way to destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and those that will be corrupt soon. See http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm for information on the Master Document feature and workarounds. See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Genera...ocsCorrupt.htm for more information on what goes wrong, and http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Genera...MasterDocs.htm for ideas on how to salvage what you can. See http://www.techwr-l.com/techwhirl/ma...masterdocs.doc for Steve Hudson's instructions if you are willing to follow them very carefully. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/ which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup. How do I insert a title for a TOC?
Thanks for the warning, which I have received before. But I know no other
route than a Master Document for producing automatically an accurate Table of Figures and Table of Contents for my 80 000 word thesis. I treat the Master Doc as a virtual rather than actual file, and use it only for printing a draft, and do not save it. How do I insert a title for a TOC?
Thanks. In the meantime I actually tried inserting the titles as you suggest
(which I had previously avoided through my well-founded fear of destabilising the Master Doc) and succeeded. Hope I can repeat the trick when I come to print the final version of my 80 000 word thesis.
