Default Icons before the names in my contact list

Why do different icons appear before the names in my contacts that are part
of distribution lists? Some icons look like a blank rolodex card and the
others have the contacts list icon - the same card with a person in the
corner.

If I remember right, the contacts list icon ones are contacts from your
Contacts folder while the others are simply email addresses you added
without creating contacts for them
