Default Settings for Office (Excel)

I recently purchased a new PC with windows XP. I loaded
Office 97 and erased the Office '03 files, since I had no
product key and did not want to upgrade. How do I now
make Excel '97 my default application when opening excel
documents on the web, etc. I have to save the file to a
location on my PC then go into Excel to open the document.

You erased Office 03 because you had no product key and did not want to upgrade?
How did you load it on your computer if you did not have a product key?

Did you uninstall Office 03, then install 97 or did you just erase the files you
saw?
What applications is opening your files?

The PC came with Office '03, however, you had to actually
purchase it online to get the product key. Does that make
sense? I loaded '97 and then went through the add/remove
programs function unload the Office 03. In order to open
the files, I have to first save them to the PC and then go
through Excel to open.

You should be able to reregister excel:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

If you still have multiple excel.exe's hanging around, then you should find out
the folder that contains that excel.exe for xl97.

then...
excel /unregserver
would become:
"x:\folder1\folder2\folder3\excel.exe" /unregserver

Then same thing with /regserver

Double quotes required if the path has spaces in it--but they won't hurt in any
case.

It does not make sense regarding having 03 installed but having to actually go
online -- who did you get the pc from?

You should have removed the 03 version first before loading in the 97 version,
but you should be able to follow Dave Peterson's suggestion to reregister Excel

Well, I really don't know what else to tell you, I am not
making this up. Here let me explain in more detail (I
don't really know why this makes a difference anyway, but
what the hell).

1.) I went to store to purchase PC. I = Jeff
Store = WalMart PC = Compaq
2.) I plug in PC and start using PC
3.) I load Microsoft Office '97
4.) I notice PC has Microsoft Office 2003
5.) I think to myself, wierd, I was not supposed to get MS
Office with the machine.
5.) When I open an excel document (attached in email, on
the web, whatever), the PC defaults to opening Excel '03
for these documents. However, you can not actually open
the document because it wants a product key. Microsoft
gives you the option to purchase this online for $XX, then
they give you the product key. Do you see the clever
little marketing scheme here used by the great Microsoft?
Further questions about that should be directed to
Microsoft or Compaq.
6.) I remove the MS Office '03 files
7.) PC still does not think MS Office '97 should open
everytime I want to open a MS Office document.

Conclusion - MS, still wanting to make more money, makes
it difficult for the end user. Does that make sense?

Best thing you can do, if reregistering does not work, uninstall Office, then
reinstall it.
