Excel 97 link not working in Excel XP

I have an Excel 97 file that a user in our UK office
creates with the help of an EMAIN97.xla add-in on her
Office 97 computer. When she sends it to someone at
corporate who has Office 97, that person can read the file
even though they do not have the xla add-in. However,
anyone with Office XP can open the file but all they get
is #name?. Why would this be that Office 97 can open and
read this file but Office XP can only open the file but
only displays '#name?'? Is there something that I can do
to make Excel XP act like Excel 97? Please advise.

Later versions of excel like to calculate a workbook right when it's opening if
it was created in an earlier version.

If there are links that can't be refreshed, you'll get those errors.

You could ask the xl97 user to convert those links to values (a copy of the
workbook--not the original!).

help. Do you have any other ideas or tweaks? Thank you
for your help.

Can you install the add in on all the computers that have Excel?

Otherwise, have her convert links to values before sending -- or print to say a
pdf creator so she is only sending a picture of the file not the actual file

It all depends on if they are using the file or reading the file

No, unfortunately we cannot install the add-in as it was
designed for 97 and there is no add-in for XP that will
work with the old database being used. I even tried using
the 97 add-in with XP and it did not work. I have
suggested using the values approach but there are so many
files and tabs that this would be impractical. These
files are used by so many people that I cannot see how to
get around this without loading Excel 97 onto everyone's
machine which is not something that I want to do.

Have you looked closely at the links and named ranges in the workbook? Have you
verified that there are no external references that would cause part of the
problem?

Yes, there are links to an Excel add-in however the file
was still readable under Excel 97 but not under Excel XP.
