IE7 open blank Visio attachments
I have Visio 2007 installed on my pc. I have been sent an outlook email with
Visio attachments. When I click onto the attachment to open the file then this opens a blank IE7 page. I can save the attachment to desktop and then open the file without any problems doing it this way I re-installed the OS and tested the original problem I had. The file opens without any errors as soon I clicked on the attachment from outlook. IE6 was installed on the XP pc. I thought I had resolved the issue but installed IE7 and the problem has returned. This is not a major issue but can anyone shed any light as to why IE7 cannot open Visio 2007 files Ronnie |

What version of Outlook do you have, and what service pack level of Outlook?
Have you ever installed Visio Viewer on the machine? The reason I ask about Visio Viewer is because that will open in Internet Explorer (since it's an ActiveX control), if you try to open an attachment with Visio (not the Visio Viewer) installed then the Visio drawing (e.g. *.vsd) should open in the Visio application. I am using outlook 2007. Not sure what the service pack level is of outlook,
because the laptop is not currently in front of me. Visio veiwer 2007 is installed on the laptop and this is the application I expect the attachment to open with. It sounds like the issue came back after you installed Internet Explorer 7. I
ran a quick test on a computer that has both Visio and the Viewer installed. By default the application should open Visio files unless there have been some change to open the file type with another application. Check the file extension under: Control Panel Folder Options File Types to see which application owns the file extension. The main extensions you want to check are VSD, VSS and VST. James W. IE7 open blank Visio attachments
Hello james
I checked the file types and VSD,VSS and VST were set to open with IE 7. I changed the file association to Steelray project viewer. I now get a different error message When I try to open the attachment the error message is “Please open a file with an mpp, !xml! or !xls! extension. Any more advice Ronnie "James W." wrote: It sounds like the issue came back after you installed Internet Explorer 7. I ran a quick test on a computer that has both Visio and the Viewer installed. I thought that you wanted the files to be opened by Visio so you would need
to make sure VSD, VSS and VST open with the Visio application. I am not familiar with Steelray Project Viewer. If the Visio files were created on another PC then do this. Right click on the file and go to properties on the general tab near the bottom where it says Security it will say something about the files was made on another PC and may be blocked. Click Unblock, apply, OK then double click it. If the file was not made on another PC then then section will not be there. |
