Default outlook contacts not recognized as an email address book

I upgraded from outlook express to outlook xp. I transferred the contacts to
outlook. The contacts are in the contacts folder.

The contacts are NOT available when you create a new message or when you
forward a message.

I looked at properties on the contacts. In the "outlook address book" tab,
the check box "show this folder as an email address book" is grayed out.

I tried to add contacts as a new adress book, but it said it was not fully
configred, so this failed.

What can I do?

Thanks!

Before I posted my question I:

Tried to "Install the Outlook Address Book Service" but I got a message that
said it wasn't fully configured and that I needed to reconfigure it.

Tried to "Mark Your Contact Folder for Use with Your Address Book" but the
checkbox to do this was grayed out.

The items in the contact folder work fine by themselves. I can send an email
from the contact list.

I just can't access the contact list from reply or create new mail.

HELP!

Thanks!
