If i search for a contact by phone number, it doesn't search for the number
in the fields, but will search in the content box below, how do i search for
a contact by phone number?

Do an Advanced Find on the contact folder (ctrl-shift-f; or right-click and
choose Advanced Find). You can choose "Phone Number Fields Only" in the
"In:" drop-down, or do use the Advanced tab and search just in phone number
fields.

Another option is to install LookOut or some other 3rd-party Outlook search
tool.
