Default "ghost videos" in a powerpoint presentation ?

Hi everybody here,

With a new win xp packard bell computer, and (not new ! LOL) office 97, I
face troubles in executing video mpg files within a powerpoint
presentation, while all my mpg files can be correctly executed by any video
playing programs including nero show time and vlc. The slides concerned with
a video shows the video windows, 2 or 3 tiny "flashes" and nothing happens.
The presentation doesn't hang, and can be continued with the next slides.
I tried to reduce the paths length (as I have been advised to), I tried to
place video files within the same folder as powerpoint files, I tried to re
install officenothing helped.

Could anyone help ?

thousands thanks (and apologize for my english which isn't that pecfect)

Lio
