Default Positioning character vertically in line

Other than using a text box, is there a way to position the asterisk (*) and
caret (^) so they fall closer to the base of the line being typed. I tried
using Font Character Spacing Position Lowered but that pushes the next
line down by the same number or points the character is lowered. Some
documents require a row of asterisks or carets inserted in line with the rest
of the text.

Loweing the text won't push the line down if you set the line spacing of the
paragraph to an exact amount.

There is also a Compatibility Option "Don't add extra space for
raised/lowered characters."
