Default Word tables: Page numbers and table rolling over into numerous pa

My ultimate goal is to have Page X of Y displayed in a table.

I want to have a table header that is re-displayed on each page. As a part of this header, I would like to have the page displayed, but not the current page of the document. For example: if I have a table somewhere in the document that rolls over to 4 pages, I would like to code/format a table cell(s) to display the page info on each page the table rolls over onto...
Page 1 0f 4
Page 2 0f 4
Page 3 0f 4
Page 4 0f 4

Is there any code, fields, etc that is availabe to do this? I don't want to have to use bookmarks or any stuff like that as I have many tables I would like to use this common header on. Would like to be able to create the header once then just copy and paste it to all my tables without having to deal with renaming variables or whatever.

This can't work as you describe it so far. Table headers are not like page
headers. A page header is 'created' separately for each page, so you can
have fields that display distinct values for each page of the document.
Table headers don't do that: there is only *one* copy of the table header,
displayed exactly as is on each page. Try putting a simple { PAGE } field
into the table header, then add rows until the table spills to more pages.
As you'll see, the table header always shows the page number of the start of
table.

I think you might have more joy putting each table into its own section,
then putting the tag into the page header; but a general method for doing
what you want, without bookmarks or macros, doesn't spring to mind.

Thank you so much for your help. I would say you saved me a couple hours or
so of messing around with it. What you say makes perfect sense and I
understand completely. I will have to accomplish my page numbering thing
outside of the table.

Thanks!!!
