maintaining contact group/sort order
generally i like to have contacts displayed grouped in categories, sorted by
first name. i can go into customize and set this up. occasionally i want to sort the whole folder by first name and then i click on the full name column. the problem is that when i want to go back to the category grouping, i right click on column headingsarrange by categories. then i have to go back to customize to get the first name sort order. how can i switch back to category grouping and maintain the first name sort? -- jeffrey |

I see. Outlook 2003 did change the way it sorts within categories. Use the
Detailed or Simple List view, show the columns you want to see (field chooser), click the column (eg Last Name) you want to sort by, THEN use the group by box to group by Category. That should have alphabetical as well as the grouping. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "jeffrey" wrote in message ... i was indicating that i am using outlook 2003, ol03 -- jeffrey "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... that is essentially what i was doing. viewing list view, click on full name
to see alphabetical listing. if i then right click on column headingsarrange by categories, the alpha listing is lost within the categories. i have to use viewarrange bycustomgroup bycategoriesokok, to maintain alpha within categories. too cumbersome. is there an easier way to maintain alpha within categories? does Ol2007 handle this any better? -- jeffrey "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... That's the only way in Outlook 2003. As I recall, Outlook 2007 returns to
the more familiar way to sort within Categories. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "jeffrey" wrote in message ... that is essentially what i was doing. viewing list view, click on full name to see alphabetical listing. if i then right click on column headingsarrange by categories, the alpha listing is lost within the categories. i have to use viewarrange bycustomgroup bycategoriesokok, to maintain alpha within categories. too cumbersome. is there an easier way to maintain alpha within categories? does Ol2007 handle this any better? -- jeffrey "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... maintaining contact group/sort order
i just installed OL07, as far as i can tell the contact sort order works the
same as in 2003. dissapointing. so far i don't see anything in 2007 that works better for me. and a few things i don't like, such as having to view a search pane over every list of contacts, emails, etc. adn a yellow pane telling me to install instant search. the usual microsoft arrongance. -- jeffrey "jeffrey" wrote in message ... ok. i don't remember what the pre 2003 method was, but i will be looking at OL07. perhaps it will be better for me. thanks for you help. -- jeffrey "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ...
