Default "Invite Attendees" grayed out

I did an Advanced Find on my calendar. Some of the appointments have
"Invite Attendees" grayed out. Others do not. What could cause
that? Web searching reveals that OWA calendars exhibit this
"feature", but this is my main calendar.

I thought that it might be the label (currently "CustomLabel"), which
uses the color for "Vacation", but it's hard to test because the
"feature" is not repeatable. It does not recur if I start another
Advanced Find. The only difference in this second search is that the
folder being searched started off as Sent folder, then I changed it to
my calendar. If that is indeed the "solution", I would say that
Outlook is frightening.

Even though the problem is gone for now, I'm seeking a better
understanding of the cause, and the solution, because it costed quite
a bit of time. Trying to prevent such loss again.

Version of Outlook? Did you create all of the items? You can't invite
attendees if you are not the owner.

Outlook 2003 on Windows XP. I did in fact create those appointments
which have the grayed out "Invite Attendees".
