EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed.... Help.
Mr B wrote:
The main thing is that if we run Excel manually (From the Start Menu, the desktop shortcut, or the Quicklaunch shortcut) it opens up just fine. It's only when Excel is NOT open and we dbl click on an XLS file that we get the error. I'll try the suggestions below and see what we can come up with. "Dave Peterson" wrote: I'd clean up my windows tempfolder--just in case that was the problem. A few xl crashes are caused by a corrupt toolbar file (*.xlb--name and location vary with versions of windows and excel). If you try opening xl in safe mode: close excel (if you have it open) windows start button|Run excel /safe Did it work ok? If yes: close excel windows start button|find/search for *.xlb rename them to *.xlbOLD and try it normally again. If it worked ok, then dump those *.xlbOLD files and recreate your toolbars at your leisure. If it didn't help, rename them back to *.xlb and see if there's something else that's causing the trouble. There's an option added in xl2k under help called "detect and repair" If that didn't help, I'd think about reinstalling... When she double clicks on an XLS file from within Windows Explorer, she gets an error screen that says: EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created. This error is then followed by one stating: There was a problem sending the command to the program. Now this user can open up Excel first and then navigate to the file and open it up just fine. It only happens when she tries to open the file straight from Windows Explorer. We've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, applying all Office Updates, applying all Windows Updates. It seemed to work for a bit on Friday but as of today it's back to havin the problems again. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next? I don't want to have to reimage the PC because she has tons of stuff that she'd then have to reinstall... Thanks. -- Dave Peterson For me it sounds like trouble with the file associations... The settings for the open (as standard) looks like this on my PC at work (WinNT 4.0 + Office 2k): Application used to perform this action: "L:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /e Use DDE checkbox checked DDE Message: [open("%1")] Just amend the drive letter and Path according to your setup and it should work... Hope this helps. Papparotti |
