Hi Gord,

As promised...the solution to this problem.
After the Office Newsgroup couldnt help, it was suggested I phone microsoft
and after a couple of hours and two or three phone calls the problem (again)
lay with Nortons product.
As you may recall the reinstallation of windows was caused by a corrupt
registry caused by nortons/symantec products, now this Office problem was
solved by the removal/renaming of 'officeav.dll' which evidently allows
nortons antivirus to read incoming/outgoing file attachments in word, excel
etc.

SYMANTEC? - NEVER AGAIN

Thanks again for your efforts,

regards

Since you're using the Microsoft CDO interface to access NG's I don't know
where you should go.

I would assume that the microsoft.public.office.setup NG is at the same site
from which you accessed the NG, but......??

If you were using a "real" news reader line Outlook Express or similar I would
point you to news server msnews.microsoft.com form where you would download
the news groups and subscribe/post to the above office.setup NG.

You could try this URL

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...c.office.setup

The only advice I have now is for you to take your problem description over to
the microsoft.public.office.setup News Group and see what they can come up
with.

It would seem this is beyond a simple Excel issue.

Sorry to foist you off like this, but I'm out of ideas.

Hi Gord,

Unfortunately not successful.
When trying to run an existing Excel file...I continue to get 'unable to
read/open file', and 'file unavailable' in regard to attempts to open word
docs, after installing the updates.

I also noted some 'global template' issues (trying to save it) when halfway
thru the two office xp updates (ie after the office sp3 upgrade, and prior to
the various security updates).
Last clue (perhaps) when they do no work, both take sometime before the
wrod/excel banner disappears and the apps actually open)..in there 'raw' form
its all very quick.

Look forward to your advice.

Gord,

Indeed that is where I get the updates from (two largish updates due for

Thanks again for your input.

I would download the updates then do the regserver steps again if still having
problems.

Are the updates from the Office Update site?

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/of...e/default.aspx

Under "Things to do" and check for updates.

Hi Gord,
Thanks for that.
I had a look in tools/options in ecxel and it was already unchecked....I
then ran the start/run commands you suggested and windows installer did
something (?) Do you consider it may now be safe to runa dndownload the
updates?

Sounds like your file associations could be bad. Try re-registering these
Applications.

For Excel.........

First try the standard fix(es)......ToolsOptionsGeneral uncheck "ignore
other applications"

OR StartRun "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes and note the space before the /
mark).

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /regserver

For Word...........

StartRun "winword.exe /r" (no quotes and note the space before the /
mark). Again, you may have to enter the full path to winword.exe

I have recently had to reinstall windows xp (home-sp2) due to corrupt
registery. At this time I also noted that none of my current MS Office (Excel
or Word) files would open. The message being received was 'unable to read
file' or 'unable to open file'. I have accordngly carried out a full
reinstall of office xp pro. This enable the files to open.
However when I download and install all the avaliable office updates
(including Office XP Service Pack 3 (English version)) , the bug/error
reoccurs.
I have therefore uninstalled (deleted all office folders) and resinstalled
(Office xp) back in it original or raw state, so at least I can use the files.
I would like to be able to download and install all security issues & updates.

Has anyone ever heard of this of have any suggestions as to a fix?
Would be much appreciated
