At the top of the screen in microsoft excel 2007 it states that the
compatibility mode is on

Default What does compatibility mode mean

It means that the workbook was created in an earlier version of Excel, so
2007 is working in a mode compatible with that, i.e. some things from 2007
will not be saved, such as a non-palette colour.
