Office 2007: no default application templates seem to be working
At first, I thought my problem was only with Excel, but have since discovered
that for all applications, the default templates cause a error with various error messages. I have been through numerous possible solutions from Knowledge Basic articles to finally uninstalling Office 2007 and reinstalling it. I had the beta 2 TR on this machine and ended up running the Windows Install Cleanup utility which I probably should not have done. My question is: does anyone know how I can repair or replace the default templates in each Office 2007 application and what the the registry should contain for these? I suspect that the beta 2 TR was not completely or properly removed and/or the registry was not properly wriiten for office applications. -- G. Wilson |

Office 2007: no default application templates seem to be working
Hi G.
Can you be more specific on the error messages, version of Windows and the steps you're using? Do the same errors occur if you start Word 2007 or Excel 2007 while holding down the ctrl key? A common issue is in leaving the 'Building Blocks.dotx' from a prior version in place from the Beta. You'll need to remove rather than rename it as the renaming seems to be easily 'watched' by the installer and Office apps ============= "G. Wilson" wrote in message ... Office 2007: no default application templates seem to be work
Bob,
Windows XP sr2 with automatic updates on. First, I have already deleted the Building Blocks.dotx after reading that article, but after I had already used the Windows Install Clean Up utility 1.) When I start Word I get the message "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable". I do not know all the consequences of this error message. I can save a file though. However, when I copy something from an internet page and try to paste it as html, I get the same message, then the paste is done as unformatted text of the page including the contents of any drop down box on the page. CTRL and Word (in safe mode) starts okay, just as in the normal mode. But when I create a document using a blank template or one downloaded from office online, I get the same message and same behavior when, for instance, copying/pasting html. 2.) Makes no difference whether I use safe mode or note, Excel starts okay, but.. Upon starting Excel, I am alread in a blank workbook. If I type a few leters in a cell, then go to another cell, say one to the right, I get the following error message "Microsoft Office Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough availale memory or disk space. * To make more memory... no longer need. * To free disk space... are saving to." Now when I edit and move, no more errors occur, but I have not exhaustively tested other functionality. I also get this message when I try to save this file; then Excel exits with a request to send a report and/or recover. When I choose recover, Excel saves the file, then reopens with the recovered file which, as far as I can tell, can now be edited and saved without error messages. I can also use other templates without any reprecussions. 3.) In Outlook: Outlook opens fine, sends and receives, but when I open a file I get the message "Outlook could not create the work file. check the temp environment variable." The file is opened but error messages where files were linked to graphics. Adding to trusted zone and downloading graphics has does not work. Going out to the inbox and trying to open the email again results in Outlook hanging. I have checked the enviroment variable in the past and emptied by following article KB 923718 for emptying temp. However, in this article it said not to use the Windows Installer Cleanup utility...and I did before I read this article. This article was written for the beta TR update. By the way, the beta worked fine. Well, that's about it, except that I have reinstalled Office 2007 and it still doesn't work properly. Separate installations of Visio 2007 and Project 2007 work okay. Greg -- G. Wilson "Bob Buckland ?:-)" wrote: Hi G. Office 2007: no default application templates seem to be work
Hi Greg,
You can sometimes get messages like this if the TEMP= or TMP= environment variables are pointing to either a CD/DVD drive or to a network or mapped drive that is not always avaiable. Right click on My computer, then choose Properties=/Advanced\=[Environment Variables] to see what your present settings are. Using the Installer cleanup utility (especially an older version) can cause some odd things to happen to the registry. If you do a search for Building Blocks how many files are found and are the dates older than 26Oct2006? ============= "G. Wilson" wrote in message ... Bob, Windows XP sr2 with automatic updates on. Office 2007: no default application templates seem to be work
Bob,
For user environment variable, both temp and tmp are set to c:\temp, which exists. For system environment variable, both temp and tmp are set to c:\windows\temp, which also exists. I see one Building Blocks file, Building Blocks.dotx, which is dated 27 Oct 06 08:32. And one Document Building Blocks FOlder in Documents and Settings with nothing in it. And various Visual Studio Folders with Building Blocks in the names. I am currently boning up on registries with Honeycutt's "Microsoft Windows Registry Guide" to begin to look into the registry for possible problems. I have seen limited reviews on four or five applications, but am unsure from the reviews which ones are really the best. Any recommendations of experience with any of the following (lastest versions)? Advanced System Optimizer Fix-It Utilities Ace Utilities Reg Organizer Registry Mechanic -- G. I am having the same problem
I am having the same exact problem with Word and Outlook and have been through everything I can find with no help. Yesterday I tried logging in as a different user and that user did not have the issue so I backup up and deleted my profile and let windows create a new one and the problem went away. Logged off last night and back on this morning and it is doing it again. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same exact problem with Word and Outlook As what or whom? You obviously don't realise that you are posting to a world-wide newsgroup and NOT a "forum" at whatever site you are posting on. You would be very well advised to either use the MS web access for this group, or even better, set up a Newsreader on your computer. |

I am having the same problem
Jeff,
Thanks for the info. Finally, I also logged in under other user names, one with admin rights and the other with poweruser rights. Neither had the problem. My conclusion is that there is registry corruption in my original installation but only for that particular user id. I haven't had a chance yet to save the respective hive files and make a comparison. but that's my next step. In any case, at least everything works using another user id. Greg -- G.
