Default How do I clear the Open feature in a task pane

In Word, Access, Excel the task pane is a grat feature. My only problem is in
the Open (recent files). Is there any way to clear obsolete files. I have a
number of files in all three applications above that I want not to see any
more.

Open "more recent files" and the others will be displaced
