Chapter/Page numbering

I have document built by inserting 23 separate documents into a "Master".
No - I'm not usng "Master Document".

In each of the individual documents I have set the page numbering to restart
at 1.

For example - footer will be "Sales Procedures" {Page} with {Page} being set
to start at 1 by going through Insert\Page Numbers\Format\Page
Numbering\Start At which I set to 1.

After each document is added, I add a Section Break/Next Page

My expectation was that each section would have its page number restart at
1. Not happening.

I've also tried the bit about using Chapter with no success at all.

This is the only snag in the document. How can I set the page numbering by
each inserted document or "chapter"

Using Office 2002 for the moment. Will be upgraded to 2003 shortly.

On the Header/Footer Tab, are you choosing Format Page number and telling it
to start at 1 for the footer for each section?

Depending on how exactly you are inserting the individual files into
your "master", you will most probably end up with a large single-section
file. In that case, Word has no way of knowing that you intended to
restart the numbering in your chapters.

The problem is: At the moment you are inserting a section break, you are
in fact creating a copy of the section break of the section your cursor
is in. The section properties (like page size, but also and most
importantly in your case here the page numbering setup) are copied, as
well, and in your master, the settings will have been the default
"continue from prev. section". If you had set it to "Start at: 1" before
inserting all chapters, you'll probably got it the way you expected it.

Yep. Even though each "Chapter" has a Section Break/Next Page in it, the
page count is continuous from page 1 through page 45. It does not restart
after the section break.

Now what I've done as an experiment is to go to the assembled document and
tried setting one chapter picked at random to restart the numbering. That
works. So it appears that even though I set it in each of the indivdual
documents, that information gets lost when assembled into one document.
Therefore I have to go through each chapter and reset the page number.

Is there an easier way?

I'll try out what you've suggested.

I've used a brute force method and recorded/modified a macro to reset the
page start number in each section.

The new interesting problem is when I generate a TOC using hyperlinks/page
numbers. Each chapter heading is a Heading 1 in the outline. Each of the
chapters show up correctly hyperlinked but the page number for each is 1!

I looled at at the codes but didn't see anything that could have a
hyperlinked TOC i.e without page numbers. Failing that is it possible to
persuade the TOC to use document page number rather than the chapter number?
Do I need to add "X of Y" page numbering so I can get the X number for the
TOC?

Aha, well, that's not surprising, beceause its page number really *is*
#1 -- at least, that's what you asked for in your first posting ...

First, let's straighten this out: You have individual chapters with page
numbering "1, 2, 3 ..." in all chapters. With "Start at: 1" you have
told Word that the page number is really that, i.e., the first page of
each chapter *is* page "1". But in the TOC you to point the reader to
page 147 for chapter 5 (how would he find that ...?)?
