Default Win95 Fax Software

This is highly questionable advice.
IMO mode was a temporary, highly dysfunctional mode of Outlook I would not
wish on anyone. It was quickly abandoned. Even worse was WinFax SE which
almost never worked, was never supported, and certainly won't work with
modems released years after it was abandoned.
There is absolutely no need to switch to either. Corp/Workgroup mode of
Outlook and Microsoft Fax worked just fine and were far more reliable.

Office 97
Outlook 98
------------

I am temporarily (maybe permanent!) using my old Win98
computer. It has Office 97 and Outlook 98 on it. Windows
used to have it's own fax software, I think it was on the Win95
version. I have an old Win95 cd and was wondering if anyone
remembers out to get this fax software to work?

Basically, what I am trying to accomplish is to be able to fax from
any Office 97 module, not just Outlook.

Thanks for any help that is able to be offered.

Hi ,
Let's get straght.
Forget about FAX software of Old Win95 temporarily.

To send FAX "WITH OUTLOOK98" on Windows98(not 98SE ? maybe)

You neet to install WinFAX starter edition which is on OUTLOOK98
CD or Office97 CD now that your PC is equipped with FAX modem and
its driver is effective and Outlook98 must be installed as IMO.

Internet Explorer 4.X must be installed wihich is the begining
version just after you installed Windows98.
If you updated Internet Explorer to version 5 or higher, you must back it
down to version 4.X or you cannot install WinFAX SE as one of the
Outlook98 components.

Then, strat-control panel- Add/ Remove software, you point Outlook98
, add components , check WinFAX starter edition in the list displayed
on window of Internet Explorer 4.X.
After WinFAX SE is installed, start Outlook98, a dialog may come up
to set account for WinFAXSE, set them as required push "MODEM"
button on the dialog to make WinFAX detect FAX modem.
If this suceeds FAX modem's port is set to "TAPI".

From Outlook98 menu, action-new fax message, you will get a message
composing window for FAX . Put the recipient FAX number such as
fax@wXXXXXXX into the address blank.

Hi Rus,

I am not going to argue with this;
"certainly won't work with modems released years after
it was abandoned."

Michael said in his first post;
"I am temporarily (maybe permanent!) using my old Win98

His OLD machine MUST NOT HAVE "modems released years
after it (i.e. WinFAX SE ) was abandoned ".
The modem in his PC is OLD and will work with WinFAX SE
from Outlook98 as well as the modem driver on PC's System CD
will work to the modem.

Agreed, but even most older modems didn't work with WinFax SE. The more
important point was that moving to IMO would have a lot of unintended
consequences for someone who preferred to use Exchange 5.0.

Hi Russ.

I am not sure that he will have the problem you mentioned
in his Windows98 + Exchange5.
Yes he has Exchange5 in WIndows98.
**********************
The only reason I have not re-installed Outlook 98 is that I am
afraid it will erase/override the fax function in Exchange.
**********************

As far as I am concerned, Outlook98++Exchange5 +WndowsNT4
Workstation(WindowsNTSP4 and IE4.X must be the version when
WinFAX SE is being to be installled) has no problem to re-install
OL fromCorp/Workgroup to IMO vice versa.
As Michael has Windows98, he only needs to care about Intenet
Explorer 4.X when re-installing Outlook to IMO and WinFAX SE
to make the installer work.

As FAX modem concerns, U.S Robotics 56K Voice FAX model
No. 0637 manufactured in 1999 worked with WinFAX SE having
no problem in my case .
Maybe I was lucky with this modem.

But the user was concerned about losing the functionality he had with
Exchange 5.0. Outlook 98 C/W is the overlay to Exchange 5.0 and simply
updates that module, retaining all its functionality. A switch to IMO would
blow his full MAPI capability away for good, leaving him with a version of
Outlook what was never intended for anything but an interim fix for users
who did not need MAPI.

Without changing Outlook 98 installation mode which is C/WG mode,
maybe printing any document to Microsoft FAX from any application
is the solution I believe.
If he install FAX function from Windows98 CD, he will have MS FAX
as printer and can send fax following file-print memu of Office97
applications or others selecting MS FAX in print dialog.
