Why does the inbox indicate there is a new message "(1)" and there are no new
messages?

And secondly why can't I access the junk folder when it says there are
messages in there? When I try to open it all I get is a blank page.

Sounds like you're view has a filter applied. Reset the View for your folder
and try again
