Default Cannot change slide placeholders in handout master (2003)

Is it true that the only things I can change in the handout master slides in
PPT 2003 are the header and footer placeholders? If I want handouts that
have any layout other than the ones provided I have to send the file to Word
and mess with it there, I guess.

You have two options:

1) Send to MS Word and format slides on the pages there.

2) HandOut Wizard add-in. I strongly recommend this option if you will have
a repeating need for this.
