Nope - I didn't do anything special other than use the "Keep my
previous version" option.

I approach installations and such as an average user. This allows me
to 1) know where the problems lie and 2) can provided advice to others
based on personal experience instead of making wild guesses and
assumptions.

Yes, because you are not "the average computer user". I'll bet you
read the precautions and you were careful how and where you
installed the beta.

(This is one bet I'd love to be able to lose for the sake of the
average user but I fear I'll be slurping my free Diet Coke in
March.)

That's a good point. Okay - I will actually *BUY* you a large
fountain soda if Office 2007 is easily uninstalled and whatever
version of Office the public had prior to the beta works without
major hassles.

BTW - I prefer Diet Coke. ;-)

Please remember that this is a BETA. You need to be willing
to risk the stability of your computer and other programs if
you choose to run it on your main computer. Plus it's a

converts to a viewer?

Default Microsoft® Office 2007 Beta

Beth,

You are very lucky. I wish I knew what your secret was. I have had numerous
problems. On Friday I was working with the new Office 2007. My computer froze
and had to restart Word 11 times. I am working with an Office 2003 file that
has built-in styles. Office 2007 seems to have difficulties using the
exisiting styles which are part of the file. In the document I have page
numbers read the chapter number (1-1, 1-2). The chapter numbers are based on
a style. Office 2007 can not properly create the page numbers. That is just
one example, of the numerous problems I have in working with the beta version
of Word. Another example, is that I typically apply styles using keyboard
shortcuts. I set up Word so that alt+N is the Normal style, alt+B is Body,
etc. Every time I try to setup these type of shortcuts in Word 2007, the
program gives me an error message and says that it can not perform that
function. By the end of the day, on Friday I was very frustrated (I just
don't have that much time to waste). I resaved the document as an Office 2003
file and opened it in Word 2003. My page numbers started working properly and
my keyboard shortcuts all worked ...and more importantly I had no more
crashes. I downloaded the "Smiley" program from Microsoft. While working with
the beta version I sent many Smiles because there are some great features in
the program that I know I will like to use. However, I also sent some Frowns.

"Beth Melton" wrote:

I haven't encountered Word crashing if I link page numbers to the
heading styles or when creating macros - I've also used a lot of the
advanced functionally.

I'm not sure what you mean about customizing the workspace but I have
several customizations, options, keyboard shortcuts, etc and no
crashes.

You aren't the first to mention that you can't create keyboard
shortcuts for your styles. I have no problems with this either.
So...do you know if you have any add-ins installed?

Go to the Office Button and select Word options. Then select the
Add-ins section and take a look at your Active Application Add-ins.
I'm wondering if one may be causing a conflict.

Regarding your style and page numbering issues, first I'm curious to
know if it is a compatibility issue. Create a copy of the document and
then go to the Office Button and select Convert. See if you still
encounter the problems.

btw, the current versions for Office 2007 are version 12 but they are
called Word 2007, Excel 2007 and so on. Version 11 is Office 2003. :-)

Beth,

Thanks for writing back.

Regarding the Shortcuts:

There is an inconsistency in my ability to use shortcuts. For example,
standard shortcuts such as ctrl+b to make something bold, work great. As
well, I created a macro with a keyboard shortcut and it seems to be working.
However, I can not make shortcuts for my styles. When I do I get the error
message "Word can not change the function of the specified key".

Add-Ins:

I checked my add-ins. I believe the pdf.maker was causing me grief. When I
uninstalled the program I found both Outlook and Word have been a lot more
stable. However, this leaves me in a bad spot because I can't pdf files. My
co-worker has downloaded a trial version of the latest Adobe product (version
7). We can use it for 30 days. We are waiting to see if Office 2007 has
issues with this software.

Header/Footers:

I took your advice and converted the document. However the page numbers are
still incorrect. I have tried reapplying the style to the Chapter Names but
have had no luck. I imagine this may not be a problem if I had made the file
from scratch in the newer version. However, personally, I will want to
migrate many of my older files into Office 2007 and I will need the new
program to be able to read the styles that are part of the existing file.

Why doesn't it surprise me that the Adobe add-in is causing some of
the problems? Actually that one was my first thought!

There have been issues with the Adobe PDF add-ins in every version of
Word. It's Adobe that needs to get their act together - the problems
stem from poorly created add-ins. sigh I suspect you'll find the
add-in has issues in Word 2003 as well.

If you need only the pdf format then is there are reason you aren't
using Save as PDF under the Save As flyout? (Under the Office Button
menu)

So then are you able to create keyboard shortcuts for your styles now?

Could you share the document you are working on with me? I'd like to
take a look at it and see if I can determine the exact problem. You
can email it to me directly at Remove

Default Microsoft® Office 2007 Beta

Beth,

Thanks for all your help.

About Adobe:

Uninstalling Adobe caused me a new set of grief. I started to get a series
of errors that stated "compile error in hidden module: AutoExec". A search of
the Internet resulted in a site that instructed me how to remove the
pdfmaker.dot file (I had to delete the pdfmaker.dot file in the Office 11
Startup folder). Many people use Adobe products to PDF their documents . I
imagine many who are beta testers are frustrated with Microsoft and likely
don't realize the source of the problem.

About Microsoft's PDF Maker:

The Microsoft PDF Maker is okay. However, it doesn't have the advanced
features I have come to like in Adobe's product (or I just can't find them).
I like being able to customize my bookmarks and set security settings. The
Microsoft PDF Maker seems to be made for people who want an easy way to have
people view files. However, my reasons for transferring files into PDF format
are to allow people to view my files, but not be able to change them.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

Nope, I can't make keyboard shortcuts for my styles...Try this and tell me
if you get the same "screen glitch". I have found that when I press several
keyboard shortcut combinations (alt+n, alt+w) that I typically use in Word
2003, in Word 2007 my screen changes and a pile of letter buttons appear
below the ribbon icons. You can not click on the buttons, and they go away
when you click the mouse.

Sending you the File:

I am sending you the file. It is quite large so I will provide you with a
link in the email that will allow you to download it. Please note, that this
file is not the only one we are having troubles with. I have opened up
numerous documents made based on the same template and they all have the same
problem. As well, I have opened up other documents based on other templates
with different custom styles and they too have the same issue.

"Beth Melton" wrote:

has built-in styles. Office 2007 seems to have difficulties using
the
exisiting styles which are part of the file. In the document I
have
page
numbers read the chapter number (1-1, 1-2). The chapter numbers
are
based on
a style. Office 2007 can not properly create the page numbers.
That
is just
one example, of the numerous problems I have in working with the
beta version
of Word. Another example, is that I typically apply styles using
keyboard
shortcuts. I set up Word so that alt+N is the Normal style, alt+B
is
Body,
etc. Every time I try to setup these type of shortcuts in Word
2007,
the
program gives me an error message and says that it can not
perform
that
function. By the end of the day, on Friday I was very frustrated
(I
just
don't have that much time to waste). I resaved the document as an
Office 2003
file and opened it in Word 2003. My page numbers started working
properly and
my keyboard shortcuts all worked ...and more importantly I had no
more
crashes. I downloaded the "Smiley" program from Microsoft. While
working with
the beta version I sent many Smiles because there are some great
features in
the program that I know I will like to use. However, I also sent
some Frowns.

I haven't encountered Word crashing if I link page numbers to
the
heading styles or when creating macros - I've also used a lot of
the
advanced functionally.

I'm not sure what you mean about customizing the workspace but I
have
several customizations, options, keyboard shortcuts, etc and no
crashes.

Default Microsoft® Office 2007 Beta

Ah! I should have told you to only remove the PDFMaker add-in - not
uninstall Adobe. Sorry! Even if the add-in isn't installed you can
still use the Adobe printer driver to create PDFs of your documents.
It's the add-in that causes grief - not Adobe itself.

It's not just beta testers that think the issues with PDFMaker.dot is
Microsoft's fault - as I mentioned before, it causes issues in all
versions. I've heard that the version you are using isn't compatible
with Office 2007. I don't know if Adobe is creating an update but it's
worth checking into.

The small letters you see in the ribbon are the accelerator keys or
key tips, which identify the Alt + letter combinations. I find if I
press Alt twice they will appear.

I'm still able to assign keyboard shortcuts to styles using Alt +n and
Alt + w so I'm not sure what is happening. I do know that others have
reported the same behavior.

I didn't receive the file - did you send it yet??

Beth,

Thanks for all your help.

About Adobe:

Uninstalling Adobe caused me a new set of grief. I started to get a
series
of errors that stated "compile error in hidden module: AutoExec". A
search of
the Internet resulted in a site that instructed me how to remove the
pdfmaker.dot file (I had to delete the pdfmaker.dot file in the
Office 11
Startup folder). Many people use Adobe products to PDF their
documents . I
imagine many who are beta testers are frustrated with Microsoft and
likely
don't realize the source of the problem.

About Microsoft's PDF Maker:

The Microsoft PDF Maker is okay. However, it doesn't have the
advanced
features I have come to like in Adobe's product (or I just can't
find them).
I like being able to customize my bookmarks and set security
settings. The
Microsoft PDF Maker seems to be made for people who want an easy way
to have
people view files. However, my reasons for transferring files into
PDF format
are to allow people to view my files, but not be able to change
them.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

Nope, I can't make keyboard shortcuts for my styles...Try this and
tell me
if you get the same "screen glitch". I have found that when I press
several
keyboard shortcut combinations (alt+n, alt+w) that I typically use
in Word
2003, in Word 2007 my screen changes and a pile of letter buttons
appear
below the ribbon icons. You can not click on the buttons, and they
go away
when you click the mouse.

Sending you the File:

I am sending you the file. It is quite large so I will provide you
with a
link in the email that will allow you to download it. Please note,
that this
file is not the only one we are having troubles with. I have opened
up
numerous documents made based on the same template and they all have
the same
problem. As well, I have opened up other documents based on other
templates
with different custom styles and they too have the same issue.

"Beth Melton" wrote:

Why doesn't it surprise me that the Adobe add-in is causing some of
the problems? Actually that one was my first thought!

There have been issues with the Adobe PDF add-ins in every version
of
Word. It's Adobe that needs to get their act together - the
problems
stem from poorly created add-ins. sigh I suspect you'll find the
add-in has issues in Word 2003 as well.

If you need only the pdf format then is there are reason you aren't
using Save as PDF under the Save As flyout? (Under the Office
Button
menu)

So then are you able to create keyboard shortcuts for your styles
now?

Could you share the document you are working on with me? I'd like
to
take a look at it and see if I can determine the exact problem. You
can email it to me directly at Remove
"NoSpam4Me" to obtain a valid email address.

Beth,

Thanks for writing back.

Regarding the Shortcuts:

There is an inconsistency in my ability to use shortcuts. For
example,
standard shortcuts such as ctrl+b to make something bold, work
great. As
well, I created a macro with a keyboard shortcut and it seems to
be
working.
However, I can not make shortcuts for my styles. When I do I get
the
error
message "Word can not change the function of the specified key".

Add-Ins:

I checked my add-ins. I believe the pdf.maker was causing me
grief.
When I
uninstalled the program I found both Outlook and Word have been a
lot more
stable. However, this leaves me in a bad spot because I can't pdf
files. My
co-worker has downloaded a trial version of the latest Adobe
product
(version
7). We can use it for 30 days. We are waiting to see if Office
2007
has
issues with this software.

Header/Footers:

I took your advice and converted the document. However the page
numbers are
still incorrect. I have tried reapplying the style to the Chapter
Names but
have had no luck. I imagine this may not be a problem if I had
made
the file
from scratch in the newer version. However, personally, I will
want
to
migrate many of my older files into Office 2007 and I will need
the
new
program to be able to read the styles that are part of the
existing
file.

You aren't the first to mention that you can't create keyboard

So...do you know if you have any add-ins installed?

Go to the Office Button and select Word options. Then select the
Add-ins section and take a look at your Active Application
Add-ins.
I'm wondering if one may be causing a conflict.

Regarding your style and page numbering issues, first I'm
curious
to
know if it is a compatibility issue. Create a copy of the
document
and
then go to the Office Button and select Convert. See if you
still
encounter the problems.

btw, the current versions for Office 2007 are version 12 but
they
are
called Word 2007, Excel 2007 and so on. Version 11 is Office
2003.

Beth,
