English Spell Checker Switched to French!
I just installed Office 2007 final and now my spell checker
uses a French dictionary rather than English to check my spelling. Of course, since I type in English, most words are flagged as wrong. How can I get English back? It's not listed as a choice in Tools/Options/Spelling. Tom Lake |

It just sounds like you need to change your proofing dictionary. On
the Reviewing tab, in the Proofing group, click Set Language. Select your desired language, such as English US, and click the Default button. You may need to select any text you previously typed and change the proofing language since the change will only affect new documents based on Normal.dot. Also, if you do not want to use French, from the Office Button select Word Options and on the Popular tab click Language Setting and remove any languages you do not want to use. Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. I just posted this over in the OE group: So, I had Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh installed, and all was well: OE6 (XP SP2) saw Office's U.S. English proofing tools just fine. I uninstalled the beta and installed Office 2007 final. Since that time, the only language listed in OE is French, and indeed, those are the only words it knows now. I've confirmed that the U.S. English proofing tools are installed and that (as expected) they're the default in Word, where, BTW, English spell-checking works fine. So...is there perhaps a Registry entry I can check that tells OE where to look for the proofing tools, or perhaps the languages? Note that OE is not displaying any error when spell-checking, it just obliviously thinks I'm French now and has that as the only choice of language in Tools/Options/Spelling. Thanks |

Beth, please see my post above, which I made before seeing yours.
In my case, and probably his, it's not going to be that easy (is it ever?). All is well in Word: It's already set correctly in the Proofing group, and in the Popular section, English (U.S.) is the only thing listed in the righthand column.... English Spell Checker Switched to French!
OE cannot use the spell checker from Office 2007.
Office 2007 ships with a new version of the spell checking tools that Outlook Express doesn't understand. The workaround to fix this is to install the English dictionary from Office 2003 (or Office XP). There should be no need to install all of Office just the dictionary. The English Proofing Tools can be found in the Custom Install tree under 'Office Shared Features|Proofing Tools|English'. That's truly and utterly bizarre for a couple reasons: One, they worked
together up through B2TR. Two, there are only about a bazillion OE users, and OE is MS's own product. They couldn't manage to keep the files compatible?! "Patrick Schmid [MVP]" wrote in message ... Three: It does work with the new French spell check. Something doesn't add
up here. "Milhouse Van Houten" wrote in message ... That's truly and utterly bizarre for a couple reasons: One, they worked together up through B2TR.
