Default English Spell Checker Switched to French!

Further, on another machine I've found with Process Explorer that OE wants
mssp3en.lex and msspell3.dll when spell check is invoked, and those files
are ancient and have not been updated with Office 2007.

So all this adds up to a Registry fix, though I don't know what it is.

Running the Office 2003 install, even if just the Proofing Tools is
selected, is not worth it to me, since a lot more gets installed/touched
than proofing tools (as I saw when testing in a VM).

Three: It does work with the new French spell check. Something doesn't add
up here.

That's truly and utterly bizarre for a couple reasons: One, they worked
together up through B2TR. Two, there are only about a bazillion OE users,
and OE is MS's own product. They couldn't manage to keep the files
compatible?!

OE cannot use the spell checker from Office 2007.
Office 2007 ships with a new version of the spell checking tools that
Outlook Express doesn't understand. The workaround to fix this is to
install the English dictionary from Office 2003 (or Office XP). There
should be no need to install all of Office just the dictionary. The
English Proofing Tools can be found in the Custom Install tree under
'Office Shared
Features|Proofing Tools|English'.

I just installed Office 2007 final and now my spell checker
uses a French dictionary rather than English to check my
spelling. Of course, since I type in English, most words are
flagged as wrong. How can I get English back? It's not listed
as a choice in Tools/Options/Spelling.

I'm so glad! I just posted this over in the OE group:

So, I had Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh installed, and all was
well: OE6 (XP SP2) saw Office's U.S. English proofing tools just
fine.

I uninstalled the beta and installed Office 2007 final.

Since that time, the only language listed in OE is French, and
indeed,
those are the only words it knows now.

I've confirmed that the U.S. English proofing tools are installed and
that
(as expected) they're the default in Word, where, BTW, English
spell-checking works fine.

So...is there perhaps a Registry entry I can check that tells OE
where to
look for the proofing tools, or perhaps the languages?

Note that OE is not displaying any error when spell-checking, it just
obliviously thinks I'm French now and has that as the only choice of
language in Tools/Options/Spelling.

Oops! I neglected to add that my case is the same as yours.
Office 2007 works fine. It's Outlook Express that's stuck
in French mode.

Default English Spell Checker Switched to French!

there is still a problem here. after installing just the proofing portion of
2003 i got an authentication fail on the 2003, 2007 passed but i couldn't
update it because 2003 fialed..............

i uninsalled 2007 and 2003 passes authentication and works perfectly with
the update site, but after installing 2007 again with the proofing portions
of 2003, again it failed authentication and the 'customer support' at
Microsoft has been less then helpful and practically useless with getting it
resolved.

the only fix i have that works is to go all the way back to Office 2000
premium and install the proofing portions of it then all checks out fine.
without a doubt nobody who paid the price we did for 2007 should have to fall
back on a 7 yrs old version of the software for a basic feature that SHOULD
be included with the newest version. a bit ridiculous if i do say so myself.

good day

when trying to install the add-on to 'save as pdf' i had to 'authenticate'
before i was allowed to download the add-on. when i hit authenticate it said
that my 2007 passed authentication, but 2003 failed, i don't recall the exact
message but it basically said 'you pirated the software key' which it is not.

everything works fine now with the 2000 version proofing installed but
again, i shouldn't have to fall back to an older version for it to work. if
I'd not owned previous versions the spell checking portion of OE wouldn't
work unless i wanted to use French, which unfortunately i do not.

flagged as wrong.

English proofing tools just fine.

I uninstalled the beta and installed Office 2007 final.

Since that time, the only language listed in OE is French, and indeed,
those are the only words it knows now.

I've confirmed that the U.S. English proofing tools are installed and that
(as expected) they're the default in Word, where, BTW, English
spell-checking works fine.

So...is there perhaps a Registry entry I can check that tells OE where to
look for the proofing tools, or perhaps the languages?

Note that OE is not displaying any error when spell-checking, it just
obliviously thinks I'm French now and has that as the only choice of
language in Tools/Options/Spelling.

Oops! I neglected to add that my case is the same as yours.
Office 2007 works fine. It's Outlook Express that's stuck
in French mode.

Default English Spell Checker Switched to French!

That's Her, there seams to be a glitch in the system.

also you mentioned (elsewhere i believe it was) you ran a PC with both 2003
and 2007 full versions, i tried that as well and the update site only
recognized the 2003 installation when checking for updates.

the worst part of this whole ordeal was when i tried to uninstall 2007 i got
an error about some file was missing and i didn't have administrator rights
to the registry (which i most certainly do) and it 'rolled back' the
installation but then any time i opened IE7 i got an 'updating' box that
again came up with that same error finding a file and that i didn't have
administrator privileges. i spent the better part of yesterday installing
and uninstalling both versions of office trying to fix this and ended up
formatting the dang harddrive and loading everything all over
again......three times !!! trying to solve this screwed up issue.

the total size of the proofing installation from 2000 is 25 meg, there
should be some simple download fix that doesn't require the installation of
the older version to get an English spell checking option.

message and what exactly does it say?

the only fix i have that works is to go all the way back to Office 2000

back on a 7 yrs old version of the software for a basic feature that SHOULD

shipped in prior versions of Office with a new version (v.6). There are
a number of changes in this new version, but the one that is causing
this problem is that Outlook Express doesn't understand the new English
Proofing Tools. This is a problem because Outlook Express has never

Office.
* There are a few scenarios in which you won't run into this

o A configuration in which Office 2003 (or earlier) has not

For example, I have Office 2003 still on both of my
computers, and I still have English in Outlook Express.
* The workaround for this problem is to install the English

Yes, there is. According to that thing I am running a stolen copy of
OneNote 2007 on my tablet. (mine is from MSDN, so 100% legitimate)

also you mentioned (elsewhere i believe it was) you ran a PC with both 2003
and 2007 full versions, i tried that as well and the update site only

Microsoft Update? Office Update? Yes, so far it seems they haven't put
2007 on the update list yet. I expect this will happen in December.

the worst part of this whole ordeal was when i tried to uninstall 2007 i got
an error about some file was missing and i didn't have administrator rights
to the registry (which i most certainly do) and it 'rolled back' the

I agree. All I can say though is that Microsoft is aware of the problem
and figuring out what to do. At the very least, you can expect a KB
article on this issue in the future.

Default English Spell Checker Switched to French!

Hi K.C.,

Unfortunately, the MS Windows folks, who do the development and updating for Outlook Express, have not, at this point, done any
updating to support using the Office 2007 proofing tools with Outlook Express as they're primarily focused on their new Windows
versions, which has a different mail/news client than Outlook Express.

A custom install of any feature of Office 2003 installs the core files for Office 2003 (so you're likely to also get prompted to
install all of the 2003 Service Packs and updates).

There are 3rd party proofing tools available for Outlook Express.

If you're using Outlook express for email with Office 2007 rather than for newsgroups, you can edit in Word 2007 and proof then copy
and paste , or if you want to send the Word document you can add the 'Send to Email Recipient' command to your Word 2007 Quick
Access Toolbar (QAT) to bring up the 'Addressing Envelope' when you're ready to send out your document. To add it to the QAT:

(Alt, T, O, C, Alt+C, C, Enter, Tab, T, scroll up)

Default English Spell Checker Switched to French!

I'd love for someone to dig deep down and tell us the files *which OE
actually uses for spell checking* that Office 2007 has updated. In my
testing, it only uses the two files I've mentioned previously, and they
haven't been updated. Until someone can tell me specifically which files
we're talking about here, I'm considering this a Registry-only issue.
