Default Installing fonts on Windows ME

I downloaded some fonts from the Internet to my PC but I have been unable to
install them into the Fonts folder. I followed the steps below:
1-Unzipped the files
2-From fonts folder, selected File, Install New Font.
3-Highlighted desired fonts and selected OK

When this didn't work. I did the fix recommended below:
a-at the MS DOS PROMPT I typed attrib +s +r c:\windows\fonts
b-restarted the computer

This did not work either.

I'm not sure what to try next, any suggestions?

This doesn't really seem like an Office question but...
What type of fonts?
The procedure you are using is good for True Type Fonts (*.ttf)

OK. When you say you couldn't install them, exactly what happened (or
didn't happen) when you tried?

The new fonts were highlighted. When I selected OK, they became
unhighlighted but were not added to the Fonts folder.

What happens if you drop them in the Fonts folder instead of using
