Office 2000 applications freeze on Save
From sometime in the past few months, I've been having intermittent problems
with Office 2000 applications freezing when I save a file. When this happens, the progress meter in the status bar gets to 100%, then the application locks up and the entire OS freezes (not even the three-fingered salute, Ctrl+Alt+Del, works), requiring a hard reset to restore the system. So far, this has happened in both Excel and Word, both when I've explicitly asked it to save a file and when I've clicked Yes in response to the "Do you want to save the changes you made?" prompt when shutting the application down. Once I've restarted the PC, I open the file again to check for any damage, but it seems to have saved the file OK. I am using Windows 2000, and have installed the latest service packs and patches for both Windows and Office. Anybody else had this problem? Any way to fix it? |

Office 2000 applications freeze on Save
Hi Matthew,
What Antivirus s/w and version are you using on the client? Do you have it configured to scan network drives as well as local? If so try disabling scanning network drives. I assume you are using SP3 for Office as well? Also try turning off background saves to see if this makes any difference - check out whether the following applies. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255917 Turn off the Allow background saves option in Microsoft Word. To do this, follow these steps: On the Tools menu, click Options. Click to select the Save tab. Click to clear the Allow background saves check box. Click OK to close the Options dialog box. Close all other open documents when you use a template that contains a custom toolbar. Click Save on the File menu to save the document before you close it. If it is still occurring you might want to phone Microsoft Product Support, so they can take a closer look at other configurations with your pc. I assume you are using SP3 for Office as well? I have Norton Anti-Virus 2003 installed (as part of SystemWorks 2003), with automatic Live Update turned on. When I visit the Office Update site, I get the message "Your Office products do not need any updates.", so I assume I must have Office 2000 SP3 installed. |

Office 2000 applications freeze on Save
Hi Matthew,
Try turning Off the NAV AutoProtect feature to see if this helps. Try these steps to see if this helps resolve the issue: 1. Launch NAV. 2. Choose Scan from the Preferences menu. 3. Uncheck "Scan for known viruses when files are opened and applications are launched." 4. Click Save. 5. Quit NAV. 6. Restart the computer.
